EXERCISE 2 - Invasion
In this exercise you are asked to invade a domestic space with elements that are foreign to it. You will
build up a quantity of materials to develop an installation that aims at subverting the use of a familiar
environment.
EXERCISE 1 - Obstruction
In this exercise you are asked to choose a passage or a threshold within a domestic or private space in which you will set up an installation that operates as an obstruction. Installations can lead you to redefine known spaces and generate fresh possibilities for how they are used and experienced.

“Paradise under the Ceiling” envisages the establishment of a paradisiacal world in one’s own room. And paradise not in a figurative sense, but in the most literal, real sense of that word. Usual theories and notions of space assign it to some worlds that are remote in time and place, inaccessible to our real presence, worlds about which we can only dream and guess, but in reality it is impossible to see them: they exist too high and far away, if they exist at all.(Kabakov, E & I 1998, 24)

notes from unit Study Guide
Working method: How to develop your ideas
1. Primary Research: Jot down ideas and find relevant artists and artwork. Read, observe, take notes, take photos, brainstorm, and make preliminary sketches. Record your initial ideas and thoughts in your visual diary.
2. Applied Research: Make detailed sketches, make maquettes (small scale models), sample materials, take
measurements, experiment, explore and visually investigate your ideas through materials and processes. Document the outcomes in your visual diary.
3. Idea Development: Based on steps 1 and 2, re-assess your ideas. Use your visual diary to note possible variations to form, size, or materials or other ways to enhance the work. If necessary repeat either of the first
two steps again.
4. Resolution: Construct the work and document it. Your final resolve for the project could be a starting point to be developed further at a later time.
Documentation of your work
Context – How does the environment in which you place your work effect its meaning? For example
an object will read differently when placed on sand than on a concrete floor. If what you produce
does not need to be contextualised (i.e. it requires a white space) choose/create an environment free of
visual interference.
Format – choose a medium appropriate for the documentation of your work (e.g. video, slide,
photographs, digital media, etc.). Consider various possibilities, as your first choice of media may not
necessarily be the most effective. For example video as the immediate choice for documenting a
performance may not necessarily be as effective as a series of still photographs.
Editing - your documentation should clearly describe your work. Think about the editing process and
do not submit all your documentation; if two images give the same information about the work then
only include one.

Storm in a teacup
Storm in a teacup (in British English), tempest in a teapot (in American English) is an idiom meaning a small event that has been exaggerated out of proportion.[1]
Both the American and British phrases are long preceded by Cicero's Latin "Excitabat enim fluctus in simpulo".[5] The phrase, translated literally, reads: "He was stirring up waves in a ladle".

VSW26 OBJECTS & IDEAS: installation
“Installation art changes the way we view art by
shifting the traditional relationship between viewer, artwork and context;
rather than positioning the viewer and space as passive in relation to the art object. Installation Art creates a dynamic interaction between the three elements.”

Narrator: Hector was not forgiven. Not yet. Not inside her. But Aisha would forgive Hector, as Hector would forgive her. One day. She knew that.
Maybe that's what marriage was, at it's core it was negotiation. It was surrender.The Slap - Episode 7 Aisha

Erwin Blumendeld
Erwin Blumenfeld (1897 – 1969) was a famous American photographer of German origin.
In the 1930s, he published collages mocking Adolf Hitler. In 1936, he emigrated to Paris. With the German occupation, he was interned in a concentration camp in 1940 because he was Jewish. In 1941, he could escape to the USA.
In the 1940s and 1950s he became famous for his fashion photography, working for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and also for artistic nude photography. In the 1960s, he worked on his autobiography which found no publisher because it was considered to be too ironic towards society, and was published only after his death.

West African Wisdom: Adinkra Symbols & Meanings
Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa, that represent conceptsor aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and advertising. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features. Fabric adinkra are often made by woodcut sign writing as well as screen printing. Adinkra symbols appear on some traditional akan gold weights. The symbols are also carved on stools for domestic and ritual use. Tourism has led to new departures in the use of the symbols in such items as T shirts and jewelry.
The symbols have a decorative function but also represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment. There are many different symbols with distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. In the words of Anthony Appiah, they were one of the means in a pre-litrate society for "supporting the transmission of a complex and nuanced body of practice and belief".[1]

wedding vails
An occasion on which a Western woman is likely to wear a veil is on her white wedding day. Brides once used to wear their hair flowing down their back at their wedding to symbolise their virginity. Veils covering the hair and face became a symbolic reference to the virginity of the bride thereafter. Often in modern weddings, the ceremony of removing a face veil after the wedding to present the groom with a virgin bride is skipped, since many couples have already entered into conjugal relations prior to their wedding day - the bride either wears no face veil, or it is lifted before the ceremony begins, but this is not always the case. Further, if a bride is a virgin, she often wears the face veil through the ceremony, and then either her father lifts the veil, presenting the bride to her groom, or the groom lifts the veil to symbolically consummate the marriage, which will later become literal. Brides who are virgins may make use of the veil to symbolize and emphasize their status of purity during their wedding however, and if they do, the lifting of the veil may be ceremonially recognized as the crowning event of the wedding, when the beauty of the bride is finally revealed to the groom and the guests.

Josh Thomas on CAN OF WORMS
would you ever sign a pre-nuptual aggreement? "yes".
you don't think it's the death of romance? "i think marriage is the death of romance".
audience: 52% NO
third questionnaire answered
"[A marriage] is an individual experience. Often it is a lie. Too many enter into an impossible contract; ensuring failure, betrayal, hurt. Marriage SHOULD be about LOVE in its highest form."
"I don't want to get married because I'm frightened of feeling like I've forgone other things in my life in favour of giving everything to my partner, especially if i end up a used and discarded vessel for childbearing. that idea terrifies me. I do want to get married too though; for the hopeful promise of sharing my life with someone, for the promise of growing up and growing old in love, for the possibility of making a family and knowing how beautiful and terrifying it feels to have so much to lose."
"HONESTY is fundamental. True love cannot exist without it. Many choose evasion and lies because they are often easier than truth. but for me, i believe TRUTH is the key to freedom and therefore also to LOVE."
"Hollywood constructs the hopeful ["get the man, keep the man, marry the man"] myth but also simultaneously debunks it with it's portrayal of the seemingly inevitable "man cheats, man leaves, woman weeps" tale. In some ways, having opposition constructed only serves to add even greater /more realistic romance to the initial construct, enhancing it's value through demonstration of its illusory nature."

can of worms
Worm #2: Is marriage necessary anymore? #CanOfMarriage is the hashtag for this worm!
@canofwormstv
No... modern society is losing the maturity and formality in life.. Marriage just isn't fitting in. #CanOfMarriage
@PixelPackDesign
#canofmarriage Marriage is a public declaration that you love each other. The fact that not everyone is entitled to that right is disgusting @SmashindaAshton
#canofmarriage while I don't believe in marriage, a lot of people do. It's an expression of love and commitment and that's never overrated.
@JasmineGrovic
#canofmarriage primates are'nt generally monogamous marriage's a religious idea and it helped subvert paganism Necessary? No. Nice? Yeah
@Perthsworst
#canofmarriage I wouldn't say necessary, but it can be nice. I don't like that if it fails the dude usually gets ripped off.
Whether you decide marriage is for you is up to you, Marriage should be a choice not a law! Freedom of choice for everyone ! #canofmarriage
People on twitter are confusing a wedding day for a marriage, there's a huge difference! #canofmarriage
I cant really comprehend marriage past the actual wedding day & the pretty dress & the party & the pressies... #CanOfMarriageI think it's really just a piece of paper. It isnt something that you HAVE to do these days #canofmarriagegetting married makes many people feel more secure however for others,it can break them up because they feel bound in. #canofmarriageMy girlfriend and I have decided that Marriage is unnecessary, why does a piece of paper even matter these days? #CanOfMarriageFor many people, marriage is just an empty tradition. They do it cause that's what everyone else did.#canofmarriageOf course marriage is necessary, with the demise of 'Price is Right' I don't know how else to get a free fridge #canofmarriage#CanOfMarriage I believe in marriage. And I've been married 20 years! Never regretted it, even through the hard times!i dont think marriage is necessary anymore but it is the norm especially when children are involved! #canofmarriageMarriage is a promise. if marriage isn't necessary, then neither are promises. #CanOfMarriage @canofwormstv Is marriage necessary anymore?i think traditional is the way to go :) things are changing but marriage shouldn't be one of those things #canofmarriage
