Working method: How to develop your ideas

1. Primary Research: Jot down ideas and find relevant artists and artwork. Read, observe, take notes, take photos, brainstorm, and make preliminary sketches. Record your initial ideas and thoughts in your visual diary.

2. Applied Research: Make detailed sketches, make maquettes (small scale models), sample materials, take
measurements, experiment, explore and visually investigate your ideas through materials and processes.  Document the outcomes in your visual diary.

3. Idea Development: Based on steps 1 and 2, re-assess your ideas. Use your visual diary to note possible variations to form, size, or materials or other ways to enhance the work. If necessary repeat either of the first
two steps again.

4. Resolution: Construct the work and document it. Your final resolve for the project could be a starting point to be developed further at a later time.


Documentation of your work



Context – How does the environment in which you place your work effect its meaning? For example
an object will read differently when placed on sand than on a concrete floor. If what you produce
does not need to be contextualised (i.e. it requires a white space) choose/create an environment free of
visual interference.

Format – choose a medium appropriate for the documentation of your work (e.g. video, slide,
photographs, digital media, etc.). Consider various possibilities, as your first choice of media may not
necessarily be the most effective. For example video as the immediate choice for documenting a
performance may not necessarily be as effective as a series of still photographs.

Editing - your documentation should clearly describe your work. Think about the editing process and
do not submit all your documentation; if two images give the same information about the work then
only include one.

Erwin Blumenfeld (1897 – 1969) was a famous American photographer of German origin.

In the 1930s, he published collages mocking Adolf Hitler. In 1936, he emigrated to Paris. With the German occupation, he was interned in a concentration camp in 1940 because he was Jewish. In 1941, he could escape to the USA.

In the 1940s and 1950s he became famous for his fashion photography, working for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and also for artistic nude photography. In the 1960s, he worked on his autobiography which found no publisher because it was considered to be too ironic towards society, and was published only after his death.

West African Wisdom: Adinkra Symbols & Meanings

       

Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa, that represent conceptsor aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and advertising. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features. Fabric adinkra are often made by woodcut sign writing as well as screen printing. Adinkra symbols appear on some traditional akan gold weights. The symbols are also carved on stools for domestic and ritual use. Tourism has led to new departures in the use of the symbols in such items as T shirts and jewelry.

The symbols have a decorative function but also represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment. There are many different symbols with distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. In the words of Anthony Appiah, they were one of the means in a pre-litrate society for "supporting the transmission of a complex and nuanced body of practice and belief".^[1]

An occasion on which a Western woman is likely to wear a veil is on her white wedding day. Brides once used to wear their hair flowing down their back at their wedding to symbolise their virginity. Veils covering the hair and face became a symbolic reference to the virginity of the bride thereafter. Often in modern weddings, the ceremony of removing a face veil after the wedding to present the groom with a virgin bride is skipped, since many couples have already entered into conjugal relations prior to their wedding day - the bride either wears no face veil, or it is lifted before the ceremony begins, but this is not always the case. Further, if a bride is a virgin, she often wears the face veil through the ceremony, and then either her father lifts the veil, presenting the bride to her groom, or the groom lifts the veil to symbolically consummate the marriage, which will later become literal. Brides who are virgins may make use of the veil to symbolize and emphasize their status of purity during their wedding however, and if they do, the lifting of the veil may be ceremonially recognized as the crowning event of the wedding, when the beauty of the bride is finally revealed to the groom and the guests.
